Multiple sources are reporting that Harriet Tubman will replace President Andrew Jackson as the face of the $20 bill, and Alexander Hamilton will keep his spot on the $10.
According to Politico, on April 20 Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will confirm Tubman, the abolitionist who led slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad, will appear on US currency sometime in the future.
That date, CNN reports, could be as late as 2030.
The decision to remove Jackson came after thoughtful discussion on the president's role in forcing Native Americans from their land and his ownership of slaves during his time as a plantation owner.
Other changes may happen as well, according to reports, including putting various civil rights leaders on the $5 bill, replacing Abraham Lincoln, and putting various female faces on the back of the $10 bill.
Hamilton's position on the front, however, would be safe.
The move to put Tubman on the $20 bill instead of the $10 contradicts Lew's earlier statements made last year. He announced in June on YouTube that he was proud to say "that the new $10 bill will be the first bill in more than a century to feature the portrait of a woman."
If the rumors turn out to be true, pop culture has played an undeniable role.
In the seven months since Lin-Manuel Miranda's play "Hamilton" hit Broadway last August, the biographical, hip-hop-infused romp has become a national phenomenon.
In March, Miranda tweeted:
I talked to @USTreasury about this on Monday. Sec. Lew told me "you're going to be very happy."#wegetthejobdonehttps://t.co/ZkLFuSmz8M
On Monday, Secretary Lew welcomed Lin-Manuel Miranda to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The Secretary and Miranda talked about the enduring mark Alexander Hamilton left on our nation’s history, and the Secretary provided a brief tour of Hamilton’s possessions and portraits on display at the Treasury Department.
The Secretary thanked Miranda for the ingenious way in which he has been able to tell Hamilton’s story and ignite a renewed interest in one of our nation’s founding fathers. Secretary Lew also reiterated his commitment to continue to honor Alexander Hamilton on the 10 dollar bill.
Thanks to Miranda's genius storytelling and commitment to spreading the word about Hamilton's influence as a politician, the founding father whose story went quiet for more than 200 years since his fatal duel is getting a warmer reception than ever.
