Haile Sand Fort

History buffs with £350,000 to spare can now buy a fort that was used to defend a large estuary in northern England during both World War I and World War II.

Haile Sand Fort, which we first spotted on The Guardian, sits in the North Sea off England's East Coast near Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire.

The £350,000 ($491,000) property, which comes with sea views, a roof terrace, and guaranteed privacy, is listed by the estate agents Tepilo.

According to its property page, the fort was built sometime during World War I and is made out of reinforced concrete and brick with riveted steel plating. Construction costs totaled £1.5 million.

The rusty fort's property page has "good-sized rooms" with "lots of storage space" as well as a wood burner, a sea-level balcony, and a two-storey observation tower with shuttered windows.

Though the fort definitely needs some paintwork, what it lacks in style it makes up for with a fascinating history. As the listing explains, Haile Sand Fort was manned by the British Army during both World Wars, during which time it withstood aircraft and submarine attacks. Though the Army left in 1956, it was manned until the early 1960s.

"We have had a few inquiries regarding the Fort," Rebecca Glen, the head of marketing at Tepilo, told Business Insider. "We're delighted to be marketing Haile Sand Fort. It is a fantastic opportunity for someone to own a unique piece of history."

Take a closer look at the property below.

Haile Sand Fort is an ideal place for hermits. It lies in the North Sea and is reachable only by water.

According to its property listing, the structure was made out of 40,000 tons of concrete and steel.

The old Cook House comes with a wood burner, perfect for aspiring chefs. It might need a bit of sprucing up though.
