Hotels aren't just great places to stay when exploring a new city — they can also be historic attractions themselves.
However, since most of the world's oldest hotels are in Japan, we favored fascinating stories and varied locations over chronological order in compiling this list.
From a hot springs resort in Japan that welcomed weary samurais in 705 to a German guesthouse that opened 669 years before the American Constitution was signed, these venerable institutions have withstood the test of time for a reason.

Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan, Yamanashi, Japan — established 705
This hot spring hotel is certified by Guinness World Records as the oldest hotel in the world. It was founded in 705 and has been owned by the same family for 52 generations.
Hōshi Ryokan, Komatsu, Japan — established 717
A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn, featuring tatami floors, futon beds, and local cuisine. Hōshi Ryokan was thought to be the oldest hotel in the world until people realized Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan had been around for longer. The same family has operated the hotel for 46 generations.
The Maids Head Hotel, Norwich, UK — established 1090s
Ever since the first Norman Bishop of Norwich Herbert de Losinga built his palace in the mid-1090s, the Maids Head Hotel has welcomed guests who come to visit both the city and English countryside. It has entertained royals like Edward the Black Prince (son of King Edward III) and Queen Catharinen of Aragon (King Henry VIII's first wife).
